TRUST TO HOPE

Youth 71Five Ministries provides many opportunities for loving, caring, Christ-following adults to engage in the lives of lost and hurting kids. We aim to bring hope through relationship; providing a safe place to belong and sharing the message of the Gospel. There are a number of ways for you to be involved in the work God is doing in the Rogue Valley – there is a place for you on our team! Young people desperately need your friendship and the love of Jesus in their lives. Through your involvement and God’s power, we will see young lives transformed.

kids need a safe place

Too many kids lack nurturing homes and a sense of belonging. At our 71Five Campus Youth Centers, 71Five City Community Center and 71Five VoTech Training Centers, kids find a safe, fun place to relax and caring adults who take the time to know them. 71Five Campus programs provide opportunities to discuss life lessons from a Christ-centered perspective. 71Five City is an effective ministry model to transform the lives of inner-city youth, their families and the neighborhood communities that they live in.

kids need hope and encouragement

Many young people make poor decisions related to drugs and violence. These kids often end up in Juvenile Detention Centers feeling broken and hopeless. And our 71Five Connect Workshop reaches kids with a powerful resiliency program in local schools. The 71Five Justice and 71Five Connect staff and volunteers offer listening ears and the hope and encouragement found in a relationship with God.

kids need someone to imitate

Kids are always looking for role models to imitate, but many are growing up in relational poverty where they have no good role models to follow. Our 71Five Justice, 71Five Mentors, 71Five Parents and 71Five VoTech mentoring programs provide young people with long term trusting relationships with adults that form the foundation for healthy influence.

we are unique in our work

Although we offer fun and helpful programs for kids, our real work is building the relationships necessary for kids to thrive. By providing places where youth feel secure, by delivering a message of real hope, and by being people kids can truly count on, we are seeing lives transformed.

We mobilize responsible caring adults to be engaged in trusting relationships with young people. We desire this for every young person in our valley. These relationships are the foundation for guiding young people according to the teachings of Jesus Christ—helping them to develop the mental, physical, social, and spiritual components of their lives. Young people will be given hope and purpose so they can thrive individually and strengthen our community.

Care Like Jesus

Marcy is a young mom who often attends 71Five Parents. She offered to make a side dish to go with one of our weekly dinners and it was delicious. Feeling grateful, I wrote a little note thanking her for what she had done in making food to share with everyone. The next day she said, “When I read the card, I began to cry.” Mary shared that the card meant so much to her that she taped it to her wall so she could see it every day. Many of the youth we meet have had few adults in their life that have shown consistent care and love to them. Marcy has received so few words of affirmation that what I wrote as a sincere thank you, was a treasured symbol of love from someone who genuinely cares and values her.

Thank you for the impact you are having on Marcy, her child’s life, and all the young people in our area by caring for others like Jesus.

Better Than One

A few weeks ago, 71Five held our annual 71Five Golf Challenge. Other than supporting the ministry financially, it also gives our kids a chance to help out and gain a scholarship for summer events. One of the kids from 71Five Campus – Ashland decided to volunteer and experienced a memorable moment. Since I had another obligation that morning, my mom picked the kid up from his house. They hit it off quickly, talking about ‘oldies’ music and what it was like to raise me. Soon the conversation got deeper until the young man started to talk about personal issues. Like, whether he should pursue the girl at school and what’s the big deal about being a Christian? When I heard about this, I wondered why he hadn’t talk to me about these things. Then I realized even though he’s shared other challenges with me, having him connect with another trusting adult allowed him to open up more.

I’m learning a relationship network creates a deeper impact in the life of a young person. One caring adult is critical but more than one is substantially better. I invite you to come join our relational network. You will make an Impact… Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. [Ecclesiastes 4:9]

Foosball Challenge

“I don’t like middle schoolers,” James explained as he left his younger brother behind at 71Five City’s Kids Club. James, a high school sophomore who’s homeschooled, lives close to Station 71Five. It was his first time visiting. He didn’t even sit down for dinner. When I asked his brother about James’ decision to leave, he giggled saying that middle school traumatized him. A few days later I called out to James as he rode past on his skateboard. He hesitated to respond but eventually I was able to invite him to our Teen Night. He asked about middle schoolers. I told him there would be a few but that the total amount of teens would be a lot less than at Kids Club. He said he would think about it. A couple of weeks went by, then James came by with his brother. Spotting the foosball table, he challenged me to a match. Scoring one goal after another this timid kid turned into a smack talking foosball champion. He told me, “I should have warned you.” He’s returned at random times to defend his championship and has also become a regular at Teen Night where, believe it or not… he’s interacting with middle schoolers.

You gave James a place to grow in his experience and confidence. Thank you for sharing hope.

“Hard isn’t bad…”

My pastor frequently says, “Hard isn’t bad.” So often we see the opposite of this attitude in our culture, especially among young people. I see it at 71Five VoTech in a student with a welding or wood project, or fixing something on a vehicle. Giving up or quitting because something becomes difficult is an ever-increasing attitude. Perseverance seems to be replaced by ‘what can you do for me’ or ‘what’s the least amount of effort I can give.’ This reminds me of the encouraging word from the Apostle Paul when he said, “And let us not grow weary in doing good…” At 71Five VoTech – Grants Pass we are doing a good thing, at times it can be hard and makes us weary. Time seems to be a commodity that’s hard to give. However, relationally, time is precisely what is needed to make an impact on an individual’s life. Sometimes we may not see drastic change in a student’s life, but if we can change a person’s perspective and work ethic, we might begin to change their life trajectory. Paul finishes his thought by saying, “…for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Thank you for helping students navigate through the “hard” so they can be successful in life and a career.

You’re Changing The World!

I’ve had the privilege of serving Jesus through youth ministry in 5 different countries. I’ve seen so much need in this world, but I’m amazed by how much need is right here in our own back yard. That’s why I’m so committed to the mission of Youth 71Five Ministries. 71Five is reaching kids in our own community. You don’t have to go across the ocean to find kids who are confused, hopeless, abused, and neglected. You see them all around us right here in the Rogue Valley. 71Five reaches out to these kids through trusting relationships. It’s sometimes a long road breaking down the walls they’ve built up due to a lifetime of broken promises and abuse. Jesus is the answer and He’s great at breaking down all those walls. Jesus gives hope and transforms lives, giving youth a new identity that never changes. I am honored to be a part of Youth 71Five Ministries and the hope that it brings kids and the global impact it has because of the changed lives of this future generation.

You are changing the world! Interested in going deeper? You can start right here at home by getting involved with Youth 71Five Ministries. Give us a call at (541) 779-3275 or check out our website at 71Five.org. There are kids who need hope today!

Standing the Test of Time

Youth 71Five Ministry exists to Share God’s story with young people, through trusting relationships in any relevant way.

At 71Five Justice, we reach out to high-risk teens in tough situations. Young people are met in a variety of locations such as detention centers, probation programs, correctional facilities, group homes, residential treatment centers and emergency shelters. Relationships are developed and sustained while kids are locked up and as they re-enter their communities. The 71Five Justice team has over 20 volunteers and an Intern who accomplish a large amount of programming 7 days a week. We’re committed to building relationships that stand the test of time and last long after teens have left the juvenile justice system.

Thank you for investing in the lives of these kids!

Pilot Rock

We recently went on our annual 71Five Hike. We had no idea it would be so cold and the breeze would be blowing snow off the trees and onto us. With frozen fingers, a few of us scaled the rocks, made it past the infamous “gap” and conquered Pilot Rock. The climb was great, and the views were phenomenal! On the way up the mountain I met Jeremiah. A sweet boy determined to make it to the top no matter what! We climbed… and climbed… and climbed some more. It was cold, so breaks for ‘sun basking’ were a must. During a break, Jeremiah expressed how excited he was to be the only one in his family to ever climb a mountain and how he was going to be the first! His excitement was so pure and genuine. Jeremiah’s excitement was a beautiful reminder of why you’re so important in the lives of young people. There are many reasons, but the fact that you provide unique experiences where kids can create wonderful childhood memories, they otherwise couldn’t… that is huge! What’s more, giving kids the ability to overcome a fear and accomplish what they see as a massive feat is priceless.

Thank you for providing opportunities where caring adults climb the mountains of life alongside young people, encouraging and guiding as they realize they truly can overcome gigantic obstacles along the way.

Thank You So Much

Not long ago I received this note after following up on a voicemail we received at the office from a woman who felt compelled to reach out and share her story.

“Back in 1984 I ran away from home. I ended up pregnant and found myself in the detention center in Medford. A group came to talk to us there and I spoke to a woman about my problems. She told me to give it all to the Lord; to let him know that my problems were too big for me. She said to pray with all my heart. I went back to my cell and did just what she said. As I was praying, it was like a bucket of warm water slowly pouring over my head. I didn’t know how much hate and bitterness was in me until it was being washed away from head to toe. That experience changed the direction of my life… Looking back now it scares me to think of where my life was headed. Many times, I think back to that day, it gives me great comfort knowing without a shadow of a doubt that God is with me. God has always been a part of my life ever since then, but recently he’s answered my prayers again in an undeniable way and I’ve had an overwhelming desire to find the group and let them know they changed my life.

Thank you so much. May God continue to work through each and every one of you.”

It’s amazing to see the hand of God, transforming lives through a person, building trust, and sharing the love of God. Thank you for continuing that work!!

EV Build

71Five VoTech – Medford just completed a cooperative project with Medford Online Academy and Central High School to build an electric vehicle kit. During this seven-week endeavor there were many, what we call, Jesus sightings. One of these was the growth seen in a young man named Jason. When he first entered our program he was very shy. When he would speak, it was so soft unless you really leaned in, you could not hear him. As we progressed through the EV car build, Jason was given the assignment to construct the main electric motor control box. This control box is the nerve center for the vehicle. He had many questions at first, but he learned quickly, and the questions became fewer. After several nights the control box was completed and installed on the vehicle. When the taillights were added to the vehicle and the wires ran into the control box Jason again went to work. This time there were no questions from Jason. Then he beamed as he told me how he had relocated some of the previously installed wires to the other side of the connection block to make the connections for the taillights. Finally, we were ready to install the main battery pack and start testing the vehicle. I asked Jason to go through and make one final check of the dozens of wires in the control box. He just smiled and said, “I don’t have to. They are correct.” When we turned on the power it worked flawlessly.

Isn’t it amazing how someone can speak into our lives and encourage us to do things that we would never consider trying? We are wired for so much more than we could ever imagine. We are all like Jason. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

A Good Kid

There’s nothing better than a game of capture the flag… until someone gets hurt. We were all having fun until Jessie got annoyed at another kid. He reacted negatively by hitting him pretty hard in the gut. Jessie’s never been a violent kid although he tends to be slightly rougher than most 9-year-olds. Generally, with kids his age it’s easy for me to simply remind them to be nice, respond with kindness, and not act out of anger, but God put it on my heart to really get on his level and speak to him in a deeper way. When I spoke with him, he felt heard and not just “talked at.” He opened up about his home life and how he misses being a “good kid” and that he wishes he could have met his dad before he died. God used me through that conversation to give Jessie a new perspective, and to display the love of Jesus.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of youth through 71Five.
