Time for a Change!

Six months ago, some grandparents brought their 20-year-old grandson, Ken, to tour 71Five VoTech in Medford. This young man was struggling with his future, he didn’t have a job, and he really didn’t have a place to live. He was kind, but shy, and you could see that life had thrown him some hard punches. He was interested in our program, but he just wasn’t ready to make the leap. Then at the beginning of this year he contacted me and said, “I’m ready to make a change!” This young man moved into 71Five’s Residence Housing, started classes, and is close to securing a job. He turns 21 this week and is feeling like truly there is hope for his future. He has excelled in the program, and he is understanding that Jesus has a plan for his life and it is good.

It’s exciting to watch the transformation happening in his heart and life. Your love and kindness has impacted Ken’s life and he will never be the same. His story is not so different from the many other students that you are a part of.

Bella from Georgia Brought the House Down!

Bella is a young girl who came to us from Georgia. She was at the lowest point in her life. She had no friends, she had dropped out of high school, and she felt hopeless. She showed up to 71Five VoTech in a black hoodie with the hood pulled up over her head. She hardly spoke to us, but she did say that she was interested in welding. Bella’s life changed. Within a few short classes Bella would be the first student to arrive. She no longer wore her hoodie over her head, she had a bright smile, and she became an excellent welder. Bella re-enrolled into high school at the nudging of the 71Five VoTech staff. In her own words, Bella said, “Since coming to VoTech, I gained a skill in the trades, friends, and a family.” Bella went on to design and weld window guards for the Salvation Army. She graduated from high school a year early and is now waiting to turn 18 to enroll in the Erickson Aviation Apprenticeship Program! Just this month Bella spoke at Southern Oregon University to a group of women about what 71Five VoTech means to her. She brought the house down. We are so proud of this young lady and the bright future that is in store for her.

Thank you for making life changing possibilities for all the young people like Bella.

EXIT to ENTER

I joined the 71Five VoTech staff 3 months ago as a case manager. I knew God had led me here and I was excited to see what He would do. I have met so many wonderful young people. Many of these students are a part of the Juvenile System, where they are lodged for 6 months at a time. One of these young men, Anthony, was exiting 71Five VoTech because he had served his time at Juvie and was ready to go home. During the EXIT survey I asked Anthony if he had ever asked Jesus into his heart. He replied, “No.” I said that he could have the hope of Jesus today if he wanted to pray with me. With eyes wide and sincere he answered, ”I do want to do that.” So, in my simple office, 15 feet from the shop where Anthony had spent time welding, working on cars, and hearing about Jesus, Anthony asked Jesus into his heart. I gave him a Bible in which he proudly signed his name and the date he asked Jesus into his life. Anthony was able to EXIT from his past life of sin and ENTER his new life of freedom and hope.

As we work together training young people with skills that can make a positive difference in their future, thank you for showing them the Hope of Jesus.
